In Conversation With Rob Ward: The WriteForTheStage Podcast

The new series of The WFTS Podcast is now well underway. We’re focusing on “process” this time - exploring the different approaches practiced by various experienced playwrights.

This week, myself and our co-host, Stephen M Hornby, talk to multi award-winning playwright, Rob Ward.

Rob‘s first outing as a writer was for his show at 24:7 Theatre Festival, back in 2013. The piece, Away From Home, was co-written by TV and radio writer, Martin Jameson, and went on to win The Manchester Theatre Award.

Away From Home toured all around the country, as well as at the Edinburgh Fringe, and a run in London’s West End.

We ask Rob how he went about developing this multi-voice piece and how he adapted it into a one-person show. There are lots of people developing one-person shows for this year’s Greater Manchester Fringe Festival, so it will be helpful to catch some insight from someone who has seen a great deal of success as a result of this mode of storytelling.

Rob also discusses the development of his follow-up smash hit, Gypsy Queen (soon to be returning to Manchester), now available on the cutting-edge VR theatre platform, LIVR.com.

Rob tells us about the things that have inspired him, about the process of developing the text, working with dramaturgs, and the way a show changes once it gets up in front of an audience.

Get listening to the podcast and check out the other episodes, including episode 2 which explores The Dramatic Question.
