We’ve been in rehearsal for Anne Wynne’s debut theatre show, A Fine Life, since Monday. So far we’ve had lots of laughs finding the best approach to igniting the wonderful comedic situations and words in Anne’s lovely script.
Monday started with a really thorough read-through. It was great to be finally working together - lots of discussions emerged regarding our own family relationships. I think we really found the heart of the play. The text is incredibly warm and funny, and we found our way into that, emotionally.
Then we started playing around with the opening couple of scenes. We found an endearing motherly tactility in Annie, and a hilarious edginess in Martin.
The second scene introduces our angel, in the unexpected form of Chelsea. And, although the first scene is warm and funny, scene 2 is really hilarious. We discover the crazy world of Chelsea - half unqualified counsellor, half con artist. You’re going to love her.
The actors are brilliant - really game for a laugh which really helps when you’re trying to maximise the comedy. They’re playful and open to playing, which is massively helpful at this early crafting stage.
Yesterday - Tuesday - was spent working on scenes 3-5, and we worked as a collaborative team to bring the progression of the story to life. We’re really discovering depth of character through assessing objective with a fine tooth comb.
Today, our writer, Anne, is coming into the rehearsal room for the first time. Really hoping she’s happy with what we’ve done so far.
